Sephon66 – (Compound) Hulk Smash (3D Print)

PREPARE TO BE….COMPOUNDED!!!

For some time now I resolved not to attempt another Hulk 3D print. The Planet Hulk project took so long and the Vengeance Hulk was a huge headache. But then I found this amazing model from Sephon66 over at CGtrader. I instantly saw potential for a large scale compound hulk. The artist must’ve based the head sculpt on the cover from Hulk #30.

The model at full size was a bit too big for my printer…mostly due to the base which was the largest piece. So I scaled it down to roughly 75-85% if I recall correctly. In retrospect I probably would’ve retained a bit more detail in the model had I gone bigger, but for the most part I’m happy with how it printed.

Going smaller took less time to print and paint which I also preferred.

Overall the making of this figure went smoother then previous prints. However, painting it threw me a few curveballs. I didn’t quite have the right metallic paint for the Hulkbuster so I had to improvise. It’s decent, but not as metallic as I would like. Also, the green skin of Hulk initially was very bright and clashed strongly with all the red/warm colors of the figure. Referring back to color theory this I should have predicted as they are complimentary colors. Visually somewhat jarring. So to make this less of a problem I painted a thin wash of red over the surface of the green. This helped a lot, but almost too well. I had to lightly remove some red to let the green highlights come through. Once I found a good balance the the colors of the figure seemed to better mesh together.

This figure was a lot of fun to make and I am happy with it. Though I still feel it’s not as good as the Planet Hulk statue I made. In any case it makes an incredible addition to my collection and highlights one more form of Hulk rarely seen as a toy/statue/etc.

If you are interested in making this yourself I recommend you check it out here and support the artist.

Altresde – Spirit of Vengeance Red Hulk (3D Print)

Little did I suspect when I decided to print this denizen of Hell – that the process of doing so would be a kind of Hell in of itself.

First, a little backstory on this unique looking figure. This creature is a amalgamation of Red Hulk both possessed by the Ghost Rider and merged with Venom. Evil within evil….like some sort of Hellish Turducken. This being shows up near the end of the ‘Circle of Four’ storyline and is only featured for a few pages. But he certainly makes an impression.

To date there is only one officially licensed figure for this character and it is a heroclix. So when I saw someone had actually taken the trouble to make a printable 3D model I just had to have it for my collection.

At first glance the figure seemed easy enough to print, but quickly I learned those spikes and the chain hook was problematic to print. Thankfully the designer helped by providing me the model broken up into more pieces which helped a lot.

The torso was the hardest to print, but the rest went fairly smoothly. There was some gluing of broken pieces and plenty of sanding to remove residual support structures.

Printing took a couple weeks of trial and error. Painting was easy for the most part, but getting the fire and flaming skull looking good took the most effort. Still not perfect, but I’m happy with where it ended up.

Overall I’m actually pretty happy with how it turned out – all things considered. I’m a bit dis-satisfied with the pose. He seems kind of awkward given the way he’s balancing. Also that hook sticking out is just begging to be snapped off. That being said I still like it and am glad to have it join my Planet Hulk sculpture.

If you wish to print this yourself I encourage you to check it out here.

Wicked Marvel Hulk Sculpture (3D Print)

Since the completion of the smaller BH Hulk Figure I was on the lookout for something new. Something challenging. Something…green.

And boy did I find it. Here I present this Hulk sculpture by Wicked. The model is obviously based on a scene from the Planet Hulk series. Here we have a Devil Corker regretting it’s attempt at eating the Hulk – adorned in full battle gear.

I will include their contact information below if you wish to see their other models or learn more about them.

This print was the longest, most complex print I have attempted to date. It might well be the most complex one I ever undertake. Needless to say I may have bit off more then I could chew. But this sculpture was so amazing I knew I had to add it to my collection.

Printing the parts took roughly a month of near non-stop printing. The main monster (Devil Corker’s) body took 7 days to print. If you have done 3D printing then you know how much of a nail biting experience that long of a print can be.

Model 60% completed with no paint

Thankfully only one part failed to print properly the first time, and the rest had minimal printing defects I was able to hide or cover up by other means.

Painting took roughly two weeks and believe it or not the tongue tentacles were the hardest to complete. I had a picture in my mind of how I wanted this to look – but the tongue tentacles proved to be difficult to decide on. I wanted them to look like they obviously live in its mouth, but resembled the outer tentacles somewhat.

Assembling also proved to be a difficult endeavor as there were so many parts with some interweaved among each other. I was able to put most of it together prior to painting. But when I put Hulk inside the monster’s mouth I had to insert the tongue just so it fit and inserted to the rest of the tentacle wrapped around his arm.

Another maker who did this model provided good instructions on how to assemble. Some pieces had to be painted separately and attached later. See video below for his walk through. It helped me.

Once the model was painted and assembled I did some final touch ups for areas that had paint scratched off (it was an effort to get everything inserted properly). I even broke one of it’s teeth in getting the tongue in. Thankfully its not very noticeable. I decided to leave it as is (Hulk broke it with his punch…haha).

Once painting was complete I sprayed a protective layer of matte varnish. A couple layers actually. Let it dry. As a final detail I put some nail polish over the eyes and arm wound of the monster. Really helped give it some added life.

Overall this was a rather difficult time (and filament) consuming model. Painting took a good deal of time to get right and assembling took some ingenuity and elbow grease. That being said its an awesome, dynamic model; and a great addition to any Hulk or Marvel fan’s collection.

I’m really happy with how it came out.
